  • What time is it? — ¿Qué hora es? (la más habitual)
  • What's the time? — ¿Qué hora es? (muy común en Reino Unido)
  • Do you have the time? / Have you got the time? — ¿Tienes hora? (a un desconocido, más educado)
  • Excuse me, could you tell me the time, please? — Perdone, ¿me podría decir la hora? (formal)

Para responder empezamos siempre con It's…: It's ten o'clock. (Son las diez.)

Horas en punto: o'clock

It's one o'clock. (Es la una.) It's seven o'clock.

Y cuarto, y media y menos cuarto

HoraEn inglésEn español
4:15It's (a) quarter past four.Son las cuatro y cuarto.
4:30It's half past four.Son las cuatro y media.
4:45It's (a) quarter to five.Son las cinco menos cuarto.

En Estados Unidos también se oye a quarter after four (4:15) y a quarter of five (4:45).

Los minutos: past y to

  • in the morning (por la mañana), in the afternoon (por la tarde, hasta las 6 aprox.), in the evening (por la tarde-noche), at night (por la noche): It's seven o'clock in the evening.

  • at + hora exacta: The film starts at eight. (La película empieza a las ocho.)
  • around / about + hora aproximada: I'll be there around six. (Llegaré sobre las seis.)
  • from… to / until: I work from nine to five.
  • by = no más tarde de: Please be home by ten. (Estate en casa antes de las diez.)

Para preguntar a qué hora ocurre algo: What time do you get up? — At seven.

  • ✗ It's three and a half. → ✓ It's half past three. (o three thirty)
  • ✗ It's ten and twenty. → ✓ It's twenty past ten.
  • ✗ It's 8 p.m. o'clock. → ✓ It's 8 p.m. o It's eight o'clock in the evening.
