Spaniards taken hostage in Mauritania

Spanish authories fears that a group linked to Al Quaeda is responsible for the abduction.

Yesterday evening three Spanish volunteers who had been taking part in a humanitarian mission were kidnapped by a number of armed men driving a landrover. The Spanish Government confirmed the attack this morning and the Home Office Minister said the hostages had probably been snatched by al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), a group that has been targeting westerners in this area in recent years.

The three volunteers, one woman and two men, were taking part in an expedition organised by Barcelona Acció Solidaria (BAS), a charity set up in 2000 to encourage international cooperation, humanitarian aid and solidarity with underdeveloped countries. They were members of a "solidarity convoy" set up to transport materials and resources needed by charities and voluntary associations working in Morrocco, Mauritania, Senegal and Gambia. The expedition had official backing from Barcelona's municipal authorities and the Mayor of Barcelona's wife is among the rest of the volunteers who are safe and waiting to receive news in their hotel in Mauritania.

The victims are Albert Vilalta and Roque Pascual, both businessmen and Alicia Gamez, a civil servant. All live and work in Barcelona and have been involved in the annual charity convoy before. They were travelling in the last car of a convoy of vehicles transporting humanitarian aid "to the poor of the poorest" along a 240-mile road linking the capital, Nouakchott, to Nouadhibou in the north. They were listening to the Barcelona-Madrid football match on the car radio and rang other members of the expedition to celebrate Barcelona's goal. This was the last contact the three volunteers had with their friends and fellow collaborators. The other vehicles in the convoy turned round as soon as they realised the last one had lagged behind, and arrived to find its doors open and their colleagues missing. The fact that valuable items such as a computer, money and the radio had been left untouched is seen to be further evidence that the motive of the attack was to take hostages.

The Spanish, Mauritian and Mali governments have launched a joint search operation.

Hijacked Spanish fishing boat freed

Spanish president José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has just announced that the fishing trawler hijacked by Somali pirates 47 days ago had been set free earlier this morning and was sailing towards "safer waters" on the first part of its journey home. He said that all the crew were safe and well.

The Spanish tuna trawler Alakrana was hijacked in the Indian Ocean six weeks ago and all its crew were taken hostage. Two of the pirates were captured a few days after the original hijack and were flown to Spain to await trial. The pirates added their colleagues' release to their original ransom payment demand, which led to a stalemate in negotiations as the Spanish authorities said they were determined to comply with international law and as such it was impossible to let the two captured pirates go home free.

Ten days ago things came to a head when pirates allowed crew members to talk to the Spanish media in telephone interviews where they underlined the terrible conditions in which they were being held, the aggressive attitude of their captors and the shortage of food and water. The pirates threatened to start killing their hostages and to continue until the two men held in Spain were allowed to return. Crew members were also allowed to contact their families, and several wives gave dramatic statements, highlighting the low morale and fear expressed by their husbands, criticising the lack of progress being made in negotiations and making public pleas for the authorities to return the two captured pirates to Somalia.

The families met with José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero last week, and after that meeting stopped making statements to the media. No more press conferences or interviews were held and secrecy has surrounded the last few days of negotiations. While the two pirates are still in custody in Spain, sources in Somalia have said that their colleagues have received assurances that they will eventually return to Somalia.

Zapatero refused to say whether or not a ransom had been paid with public money and when asked about a possible ransom he just said that the Spanish government had done what it had to do to secure the mens' freedom and a peaceful end to the conflict. He praised the relatives of crew for the discretion they had shown since he met with them, and he also expressed his gratitude to Mariano Rajoy, leader of the opposition, for his support during the conflict.

Wind power in Spain

For the first time ever this weekend Spain's wind turbines produced more energy than the Spanish electricity grid. Thanks to strong winds throughout Spain, the wind farms produced a record-breaking amount of energy and on Sunday morning 53% of electricity produced in Spain had been generated by the turbines (the previous record, 44%, was registered last week).

Yesterday at 14.30 a record 11,546 megawatts were registered - this is equivalent to the amount of power generated by 11 nuclear reactors and represents a triumph for the renewable energy sector. Luis Atienza, Chairman of Red Electrica de España, told El País that Spain should be proud of the achievement: "No other country the same size as us has managed to generate over 50 percent of its electricity requirements using renewable energy for so long". And José Donoso, Chairman of the Spanish Eolic Business Association, reminded El País that just four years ago the members of the Association were told that the most energy they could reasonably expect to generate was 14% Spain's requirements. Donoso hopes that production will continue to rise, reaching 40,000 megawatts in the year 2020.

The experts were particularly pleased that the record was achieved in the early hours of the morning, when demand is lower than usual, and the system was able to save energy for peak demand times later on in the day. Whereas on other occasions the electricity grid has had to turn off a third of Spain's wind turbines due to over supply, this time the system increased the amount of electricity being exported and the water pumped into reversible resevoirs, thereby absorbing 4,000 megawatts to be used later on in the day.

So far this month, eolic energy has generated more power than the gas and nuclear energies. And by the end of the year all renewable energies in Spain will have increased their contribution to the country's power supply as 13% power will have been generated by eolic energy, between 9% abnd 10% by hydraulic energy and 2.5% by solar energy.
