Michelin star restaurants in Spain

Last night the Catalan chef Joan Roca became the latest in a series of up and coming Spanish chefs to be awarded the coveted third Michelin star. Roca launched his restaurant, El Celler de Can Roca, in 1986 with his brothers Jordi (pastry chef) and Josep (sommelier). The three brothers belong to the third generation of a family dedicated to the catering industry.

El Celler de Can Roca in Girona was presented with its third star yesterday in Madrid during the presentation of the latest Michelin Spain and Portugal Guide.

Spain has seven three-star restaurants which are:
  • Juan Mari Arzak, restaurante Arzak (San Sebastián),
  • Santi Santamaría, restaurante Can Fabes (San Celoni),
  • Ferrán Adriá, restaurante El Bulli (Rosas), Martín Berasategui,
  • restaurante Martín Berasategui (Lasarte),
  • Carme Ruscalleda (Sant Pau) and
  • Pedro Subijana (San Sebastián).
Four restaurants have gone from one-star to two-star in the new guide, Casa Marcial de Arriondas (Asturias), Lasarte (Barcelona), La terraza del Casino (Madrid), and Les Cols (Olot) and one, Tristán, de Portals Nous (Mallorca) has lost its second star.

The following restaurants have obtained their first Michelin star:
  • El Etxebarri Axpe (Vizcaya),
  • la Enoteca del Hotel Arts de Barcelona,
  • A Estación de Cambre (A Coruña),
  • M.B. de Guía de Isora (Tenerife),
  • Bo,Tic, de Corça (Gerona),
  • Julio Fontanar dels Alforíns (Valencia),
  • La Fonda Xesc Gombrèn (Gerona),
  • Cocinandos de León, La Broche, (Madrid),
  • Diverxo (Madrid),
  • Kabuki Wellington (Madrid),
  • Ramón Freixa (Madrid),
  • As Garzas, de Malpica (A Coruña),
  • La Cabaña de la Finca Buenavista (Murcia),
  • Alejandro de Roquetas del Mar (Almería) and
  • Torreó de L'India de Xerta (Tarragona).
And finally nine restaurants in Spain have lost their star. These are:
  • Kursaal (San Sebastián),
  • El Gallery Arts & Food (Gijón),
  • Lillas Pastia (Huesca),
  • Chaflán (Madrid),
  • Solar de Puebla (Santa Cruz De Bezana, Cantabria),
  • Read's (Santa María del Camí, Mallorca),
  • La Taberna de Rotilio de Sanxenxo (Pontevedra) and
  • Alejandro del Toro (Valencia).
