Spain backs Palestine’s UN membership application

Following a meeting between Mahmud Abás, the president of the Palestinian National Authority, and the Spanish Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trinidad Jiménez, in Madrid yesterday it has been confirmed that the Spanish government will support Palestine’s application to become a member of the UN as a sovereign state.

Trinidad Jiménez reafirmed Spain’s commitment to working towards a long lasting peace agreement for the Middle East within the framework of the UN based on the recognition of the existence of both Palestinian and Israeli sovereign states.

During a meeting with King of Spain Abás spoke about the general reasons why he would put forward the proposal for Palestine to be accepted as a sovereign member of the UN during the next meeting of the UN General Assembly.
