href=\"https:\/\/www.blogger.com\/Women%20who%20feel%20that%20they%20become%20more%20forgetful%20as%20menopause%20approaches%20shouldn%E2%80%99t%20just%20%E2%80%9Cfuhgetabout%20it%E2%80%9D:%20There%20may%20be%20something%20to%20their%20own%20widespread%20reports%20that%20they%E2%80%99re%20more%20likely%20to%20forget%20things%20as%20menopause%20approaches,%20say%20scientists%20who%20reported%20results%20from%20a%20small%20study%20today%20at%20the%20annual%20meeting%20of%20the%20International%20Neuropsychological%20Society%20in%20Boston.%20%20The%20team%20from%20the%20University%20of%20Rochester%20Medical%20Center%20found%20that%20the%20issue%20is%20not%20really%20impaired%20memory.%20Instead,%20the%20team%20found%20a%20link%20between%20complaints%20of%20forgetfulness%20and%20the%20way%20middle-aged,%20stressed%20women%20learn%20or%20%E2%80%9Cencode%E2%80%9D%20new%20information.%20%20%E2%80%9CThis%20is%20not%20what%20most%20people%20think%20of%20traditionally%20when%20they%20think%20of%20memory%20loss,%E2%80%9D%20said%20co-author%20Mark%20Mapstone,%20Ph.D.,%20assistant%20professor%20of%20Neurology.%20%E2%80%9CIt%20feels%20like%20a%20memory%20problem,%20but%20the%20cause%20is%20different.%20It%20feels%20like%20you%20can%E2%80%99t%20remember,%20but%20that%E2%80%99s%20because%20you%20never%20really%20learned%20the%20information%20in%20the%20first%20place.%E2%80%9D%20%20%22This%20will%20resonate%20for%20most%20women.%20There%20really%20is%20something%20going%20on.%22%20The%20findings%20come%20from%20Mapstone%20and%20Miriam%20Weber,%20Ph.D.,%20memory%20experts%20at%20the%20University%E2%80%99s%20Memory%20Disorders%20Clinic%20who%20are%20seeing%20more%20and%20more%20middle-aged%20women%20who%20say%20they%20are%20having%20problems%20with%20forgetfulness.%20%20%E2%80%9CWe%20see%20a%20lot%20of%20women%20who%20are%20afraid%20they%20are%20losing%20their%20minds,%E2%80%9D%20said%20Weber,%20a%20senior%20instructor%20of%20Neurology,%20who%20presented%20the%20results.%20%E2%80%9CA%20lot%20of%20women%20complain%20that%20their%20thinking%20or%20their%20memory%20isn%E2%80%99t%20what%20it%20used%20to%20be.%20Their%20big%20fear%20is%20that%20it%E2%80%99s%20early%20Alzheimer%E2%80%99s%20disease.%E2%80%9D%20%20The%20team%20found%20nothing%20to%20support%20the%20idea%20that%20such%20women%20are%20on%20their%20way%20to%20developing%20Alzheimer%E2%80%99s%20disease,%20and%20they%20didn%E2%80%99t%20find%20any%20problem%20with%20what%20most%20people%20consider%20%E2%80%9Cmemory.%E2%80%9D%20But%20they%20did%20make%20a%20finding%20that%20helps%20explain%20why%20women%20in%20their%2040s%20and%2050s%20frequently%20say%20they%E2%80%99re%20having%20memory%20problems:%20It%E2%80%99s%20possible%20that%20their%20changing%20moods%20and%20hectic%20lives%20make%20it%20harder%20to%20keep%20track%20of%20everything.%20%20The%20work%20is%20the%20latest%20salvo%20in%20a%20years-long%20back%20and%20forth%20about%20memory,%20menopause,%20and%20estrogen.%20Doctors%20long%20thought%20that%20hormone-replacement%20therapy%20helped%20protect%20women%20against%20cognitive%20decline.%20But%20three%20years%20ago,%20scientists%20announced%20that%20HRT%20slightly%20raises%20the%20risk%20of%20developing%20dementia.%20Those%20results%20came%20soon%20after%20other%20results%20where%20scientists%20said%20that%20HRT%20brings%20with%20it%20increased%20risk%20of%20breast%20cancer,%20heart%20disease,%20and%20stroke.%20%20When%20it%20comes%20to%20memory,%20a%20study%20in%202003%20of%20more%20than%20800%20women%20found%20no%20evidence%20that%20memory%20problems%20occur%20as%20part%20of%20menopause.%20But%20neuropsychologists%20like%20Weber%20and%20Mapstone%20continue%20to%20see%20a%20steady%20stream%20of%20patients%20reporting%20memory%20problems%20as%20they%20approach%20menopause,%20mixing%20in%20with%20more%20typical%20older%20patients%20with%20problems%20like%20Alzheimer%E2%80%99s%20disease.%20%20So%20Weber%20and%20Mapstone%20put%2024%20women%20who%20complained%20of%20memory%20problems%20through%20a%20battery%20of%20tests%20that%20tested%20several%20cognitive%20skills,%20not%20just%20traditional%20memory,%20where%20a%20piece%20of%20information%20is%20stored%20away%20and%20then%20retrieved%20later.%20%20Like%20the%202003%20study,%20Weber%20and%20Mapstone%20found%20no%20evidence%20that%20women%20approaching%20menopause%20suffer%20from%20strictly%20memory%20problems%20any%20more%20than%20anyone%20else%20%E2%80%93%20of%20the%2024%20women%20tested,%20they%20found%20only%20one%20who%20had%20any%20type%20of%20impaired%20memory,%20where%20a%20person%20flat%20out%20forgets%20things%20she%20once%20knew%20or%20remembered.%20%20Looking%20more%20closely,%20however,%20they%20did%20find%20that%20the%20women%20who%20complained%20more%20about%20problems%20with%20forgetfulness%20had%20a%20harder%20time%20learning%20or%20%E2%80%9Cencoding%E2%80%9D%20new%20information,%20which%20can%20masquerade%20as%20a%20problem%20with%20memory.%20While%20the%20team%20found%20a%20clear%20correlation%20between%20the%20level%20of%20the%20women%E2%80%99s%20complaints%20and%20their%20ability%20to%20learn%20new%20information,%20Weber%20and%20Mapstone%20point%20out%20that%20none%20of%20the%20women%20actually%20had%20an%20impaired%20ability%20to%20learn%20new%20information.%20They%20say%20a%20larger,%20more%20thorough%20study,%20involving%20hundreds%20of%20women%20and%20a%20broad%20array%20of%20cognitive%20tests%20before%20and%20during%20menopause,%20is%20needed%20to%20understand%20the%20link%20more%20fully.%20%20Mapstone%20and%20Weber%20liken%20the%20problem%20of%20encoding%20new%20information%20to%20a%20situation%20where%20a%20doctor%20tells%20a%20patient%20that%20something%20serious%20may%20be%20wrong%20and%20gives%20a%20lot%20of%20detail.%20Afterwards,%20the%20person%20gets%20home%20and%20can%20hardly%20remember%20what%20the%20doctor%20said.%20It%E2%80%99s%20not%20that%20the%20person%20necessarily%20forgot%20what%20was%20said;%20it%E2%80%99s%20more%20likely%20that%20they%20never%20really%20heard%20the%20doctor%20the%20first%20time,%20because%20they%20were%20so%20anxious%20and%20worried.%20%20The%20same%20may%20be%20true%20of%20women%20approaching%20menopause,%20many%20of%20whom%20live%20a%20life%20filled%20with%20stress%20and%20worry.%20Indeed,%20Weber%20and%20Mapstone%20found%20that%20most%20of%20the%20women%20in%20their%20study%20had%20some%20sort%20of%20mood%20distress,%20including%20symptoms%20of%20depression%20or%20anxiety.%20%20%E2%80%9CWhen%20people%20spread%20their%20attention%20thin,%20it%E2%80%99s%20difficult%20to%20encode%20new%20information.%20When%20they%E2%80%99re%20worried%20or%20anxious%20about%20being%20late%20for%20work,%20or%20the%20problems%20of%20an%20aging%20parent%20%E2%80%93%20that%20sort%20of%20stress%20can%20rob%20your%20attentional%20resources%20and%20impact%20your%20ability%20to%20encode%20information%20properly,%E2%80%9D%20said%20Mapstone,%20who%20said%20similar%20difficulty%20taking%20in%20new%20information%20is%20typical%20of%20nearly%20any%20man%20or%20woman%20who%20is%20anxious%20or%20depressed.%20%20Weber%20said%20the%20study%20points%20out%20the%20importance%20for%20women%20who%20are%20feeling%20anxious%20or%20depressed%20to%20seek%20treatment,%20a%20step%20that%20should%20ease%20any%20cognitive%20difficulties.%20%20%E2%80%9CWhat%20characterizes%20these%20women%20is%20that%20they%E2%80%99re%20being%20pulled%20in%20a%20lot%20of%20different%20directions.%20Many%20work%20%E2%80%93%20they%20have%20careers,%20aging%20parents,%20children.%20Then%20they%E2%80%99re%20going%20through%20this%20dramatic%20hormonal%20change,%E2%80%9D%20Weber%20said.%20%20%E2%80%9CThis%20will%20resonate%20for%20most%20women,%E2%80%9D%20said%20Weber.%20%E2%80%9CThere%20really%20is%20something%20going%20on.%20And%20perhaps%20knowing%20that%20their%20perceived%20problems%20with%20memory%20do%20not%20suggest%20early%20dementia%20might%20alleviate%20their%20concerns%20and%20actually%20improve%20their%20functioning%20%E2%80%93%20it%E2%80%99s%20one%20less%20thing%20to%20worry%20about.%E2%80%9D\"
