This week the Prado Museum opens a new exhibition covering five centuries of

Spanish portraits, from El Greco to Picasso. The exhibition has 87 paintings, opens
\n
tomorrow and will stay open for three and a half months.<\/p>\n

The Prado Museum\u2019s Spanish Art exhibition is unique in that it covers such a long
\n
period and illustrates the evolution of the style, social meaning and strategies of
\n
Spanish portrait artists over five centuries. <\/p>\n

The Museum describes this unique exhibition as follows:<\/p>\n

An exhibition that offers an overview of the history of the Spanish <\/em>
\n
portrait, <\/em>from its origins to the avant-garde. It includes more than <\/em>
\n
80 paintings by the <\/em>leading artists to have worked in this genre, <\/em>
\n
including Alonso S\u00e1nchez Coello, <\/em>El Greco, Jos\u00e9 de Ribera, <\/em>
\n
Diego Vel\u00e1zquez, Anton Rafael Mengs, <\/em>Francisco de Goya, <\/em>
\n
Federico de Madrazo, Joaqu\u00edn Sorolla, Ignacio Zuloaga, <\/em>
\n
Joan Mir\u00f3, Juan Gris and Pablo Picasso.
\n

\n
This broad viewpoint allows not only for an analysis of the <\/em>
\n
development of the <\/em>genre, but also an examination of the <\/em>
\n
varying social implications of the portrait <\/em>in Spain over the <\/em>
\n
centuries, and of the aspirations of the sitters in conveying <\/em>
\n
their <\/em>images to posterity. The exhibition includes paintings <\/em>
\n
by Vel\u00e1zquez, <\/em>Goya and Picasso not previously exhibited in <\/em>
\n
S<\/em>pain. <\/em><\/p>\n

Art galleries from all over the world have collaborated to make this exhibition possible.<\/p>\n
