Here is a summary of the new traffic legislation in Spain based on the new \u00abpoints\u00bb system:<\/p>\n<p>From now on there will be three main categories of drivers:<br \/>\u00abNormal\u00bb &#8211; 12 points<br \/>\u00abNew drivers\u00bb &#8211; drivers with less than 3 years experience &#8211; 8 points<br \/>\u00abVeterans\u00bb &#8211; drivers who have lost all their points and have got a new licence &#8211; 8 points.<\/p>\n<p>How to win back points:<br \/>If drivers successfully complete a course of \u00absensibilizaci\u00f3n and reeducaci\u00f3n\u00bb they will be awarded 4 points.<br \/>If drivers drive for three years without committing any breach of conduct they will win back all their points.<\/p>\n<p>Points lost for bad driving:<\/p>\n<p>Drivers lose 6 points for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Driving under the influence of alcohol (>0,75 mg\/l). <\/li>\n<li>Driving under the influence of drugs<\/li>\n<li>Refusing to undergo breath tests<\/li>\n<li>Driving in the wrong direction<\/li>\n<li>Driving in unauthorised races or competitions<\/li>\n<li>Dangerous driving<\/li>\n<li>Driving vehicles which are not permitted on motorways<\/li>\n<li>Speeding over 50% or 30 km over the authorised speed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Drivers lose 4 points for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Driving under the influence of alcohol ((0,25-0,75 mg\/l)<\/li>\n<li>Driving a vehicle with too many passengers (50% more than the authorised limit)<\/li>\n<li>Driving in parallel with other vehicles<\/li>\n<li>Driving a vehicle with no registration plate<\/li>\n<li>Driving a vehicle which has not passed its MOT<\/li>\n<li>Driving irresponsibly<\/li>\n<li>Speeding (over 40-50 km the limit)<\/li>\n<li>Failing to respect right of way <\/li>\n<li>Failing to respect a STOP sign<\/li>\n<li>Failing to respect overtaking laws<\/li>\n<li>Changing direction in dangerous situations, such as tunnels, junctions, motorways and roads where overtaking is forbidden.<\/li>\n<li>Reversing on motorways<\/li>\n<li>Accelerating to prevent other vehicles from overtaking<\/li>\n<li>Overtaking on bends or when visibility is reduced<\/li>\n<li>Failure to obey traffic police<\/li>\n<li>Failure to obey traffic lights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Drivers lose 3 points for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Speeding <\/li>\n<li>Not respecting distances with vehicles in front<\/li>\n<li>Driving without lights <\/li>\n<li>Driving with lights which dazzle other drivers<\/li>\n<li>Driving while using other devices which prevent the driver from paying full attention to driving (eg mobile telephones)<\/li>\n<li>Stopping or parking in bends, areas with reduced visibility, tunnels, junctions, dangerous areas or areas which present other drivers with difficulties<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Drivers lose 2 points for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stopping or parking in: places which make it more difficult for other vehicles to turn; urban areas where lack of visibility represents danger; tram lines; places which make it difficult for other drivers to see road signs; lanes reserved for public transport<\/li>\n<li>Driving vehicles which have mechanisms installed aimed at avoiding police controls<\/li>\n<li>Not obeying rules of overtaking other vehicles (even if other drivers are not put at risk)<\/li>\n<li>Changing direction or reversing against traffic rules<\/li>\n<li>Driving without wearing seatbelts, helmets or other compulsory protective devices (driver or passengers), <\/li>\n<li>Riding motorbikes with underage passengers (12 years) without permission<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For practical advice on traffic norms and customs in Spain see:<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euroresidentes.com\/euroresiuk\/travel-spain\/driving-in-spain.htm\"><strong>Driving in Spain<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euroresidentes.com\/resitravel_road.html\"><strong>Roads in Spain<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week the Spanish government passed new legislation aimed at reducing Spain&#8217;s terrible record of traffic accidents and road safety.
