Twenty six people have been injured during the \u2018Nit del Alb\u00e1\u2019 in Elche, Alicante. Two are in a serious conditon. The \u2018Nit del Alb\u00e1\u2019 is a fireworks party which takes place every year during the fiestas in honour of the Virgen de la Asunci\u00f3n, patron of the city.<\/p>\n
Ten of the injured had to be treated in hospital with the other sixteen receiving treatment from the red cross on the streets. Out of the total number of injured fourteen are children, the youngest a 15 month old baby.<\/p>\n
Two of the injured are in a serious conditon. One of which was a 31 year old man from Elche who was hit by a firework set off during the celebrations. He suffered second and third degree burns to his stomach and hands. He has since been transferred to the burns unit in Alicante hospital where he remains in a serious conditon. The second is a 11 year old child who received serious injuries to his eye.<\/p>\n
These events call into question whether the \u2018Nit del Alb\u00e1\u2019 should be allowed to continue for safety reasons. Many people are injured every year although this year has been one of the worst. But health and safety issues are not the only concern. The added cost to the Spanish Health system also needs to be taken into account.<\/p>\n
