Spain\u2019s largest trade unions say that today\u2019s general strike is receiving massive support with up to 70% of their members on strike today in protest at the Spanish government\u2019s austerity measures. Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) says that electricity consumption is similar to that of a bank holiday and has estimated that around 10 million workers are supporting today\u2019s strike. <\/p>\n
Comisiones Obreras says that production in some sectors of industry are at a complete standstill like the Citr\u00f6en or Peugeot car production plants. According to CCOO the strike is receiving around 90% support from workers in the supply industries and most public works have been paralyzed. In addition it says that street cleaners did not turn up for work in most of Spain\u2019s major cities this morning. It has also confirmed that four pickets were injured this morning. <\/p>\n
The Union General de Trabajadores (UGT), Spain\u2019s second largest trade union, says that it believes that today\u2019s strike is receiving around 70% support from its members. It has also said that it regrets the heavy tactics used by the police in some parts of the country. <\/p>\n
In a statement to the press the UGT highlighted the support for today\u2019s strike in some sectors of industry such as metal or car production especially in the General Motors car production plan in Zaragoza.
