I mentioned Julia Neuberger\u2019s recent book on July 6th. and said that I would read it, which is what I am now doing. She sumarises her \u2018manifesto\u2019 into staccato\u2013like statements, which become the headings for each of her ten chapters.<\/p>\n
Here they are \u2013<\/p>\n
1. Don\u2019t make assumptions about my age \u2013 end age discrimination<\/p>\n
2. Don\u2019t waste my skills and experience \u2013 the right to work<\/p>\n
3. Don\u2019t take my pride away- end begging for entitlements<\/p>\n
4. Don\u2019t trap me at home because there are no loos or seats \u2013 reclaim the streets<\/p>\n
5. Don\u2019t make me brain dead, let me grow \u2013 open access to learning<\/p>\n
6. Don\u2019t force me into a care home \u2013 real choice in housing<\/p>\n
7. Don\u2019t treat those who look after me like rubbish \u2013 train and reward care assistants properly<\/p>\n
8. Don\u2019t treat me like I\u2019m not worth repairing \u2013 community beds and hospitals<\/p>\n
9. Don\u2019t treat me as meaningless \u2013 the right to die well<\/p>\n
10. Don\u2019t assume I\u2019m not enjoying life, give me a chance \u2013 grey rage<\/p>\n
The book is breathless and repetitive and has clearly been put together in haste, but I am finding it well worthwhile. I shall be referring to some of her statistics, research and reflections, and commenting on them in a few future postings. <\/p>\n
