\nusually go to our local Methodist Church on Sunday mornings. Last Sunday the
\nservice was led by a retired Deacon for whom I have much respect and whose
\nministry continues in various ways. It was a helpful but traditional service,
\nat least until the last moment. During the sign-off or benediction her prayer
\nembraced \u2018all those we love\u2019 and then she added \u2018and all those we find it
\ndifficult to love\u2019.<\/div>\n

\nIn
\na small East End of London church for which I had some responsibility, we often
\nheld an afternoon service for the sake of an elderly person who couldn\u2019t manage
\nto get there in the morning. There were just a few of us, almost fulfilling the
\nwords of Jesus \u2018when two or three who gather in my name\u2019; sitting in a circle.
\nI was talking about loving neighbours. \u2018You should meet my neighbour\u2019, said Sylvia,
\nand for the next few minutes she told us about the tyranny of the occupant in
\nthe flat above her. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nThere
\nis controversy just now about the use of twitter. Caroline Priado-Perez has
\nbeen successful in arguing that the picture of a well-known woman instead of
\nthe inevitable famous man should be on the next printing of the \u00a310 bank note.
\nFor this she has been threatened on twitter with rape.  A man has subsequently been arrested. Twitter
\nclaims that it provides a mere platform but, because of this and other such cases,
\nthere is increasing pressure on them to balance commercial interest with moral
\nduty. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nI
\ndon\u2019t use twitter, partly because if I did it would be yet another internet
\ninvader, partly because these blogs are sufficiently public to satisfy any need
\nI have to communicate thoughts and ideas, but mainly because anonymity is
\ncowardly. It\u2019s a crime to hit someone in the street, but some of the twittering
\nthat goes on is equally violent. There has been massive response to the case
\nmentioned above, with people (men) joining the ugly game of abusing women. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nMy
\nwife and I are finding it increasingly difficult to read or listen to the news,
\nthese days, populated as it is by exceedingly unlovely people who exercise
\npower over others but without responsibility for the consequences. This is true
\nof individuals such as this incidence of a man threatening to rape a woman he
\ndisagrees with. It\u2019s also true of employers who rob their workers of basic
\nrights and of huge multi-nationals who hide from public scrutiny by claiming
\ncommercial confidentiality. <\/div>\n
\n<\/div>\n
\nI
\nbelieve in the solidarity of human nature and can just about think of everyone
\nas \u2018neighbours\u2019. But loving them is not so easy.<\/div>\n
