Spanish Mediterranean coast invaded by jellyfish

At this time of year it is quite common to see the odd jellyfish floating on the water along the Spanish costas and as September approaches the number usually increases. But this year a massive plague of jelly fish is affecting Spain's most popular resorts, and some beaches are so full of the floating animals that holidaymakers, sweating from the unusually high temperatures this Summer, are unable to have a pleasant swim in the cool sea.

During this period last year, red cross stations set on Spanish beaches had treated just 6 bathers with jellyfish stings. So far this August, 127 have been treated and according the El Pais, some beaches have had to raise the red or amber flag this weekend. A red flag means bathing is forbidden, and a yellow flag means bathers are advised not to bathe. Usually the flags are used when winds create waves and currents which can drag swimmers out to sea.

Ecologists have warned that the sheer size of the jellyfish invasion this year is an indication of degradation and imbalance in the ecosystem of the Mediterranean Ocean. Jellyfish are 95 percent water. They feed on plancton, thrive in warm waters, and are eaten by marine reptiles such as turtles. According to marine biologists, global warming favours the proliferation of animals like jellyfish.

The drought in Spain this year has meant that less cool river water has reached the sea and as a consequence, the temperature of the sea around the Spanish costas has risen, which makes it easier for jellyfish to reproduce. Meanwhile, the rise in population along the Mediterranean, as more and more people choose to buy property near the sea, has caused an increase in residual waters which are poured into the sea, creating an excess in certain nutrients which the jellyfish feed on. Finally, more than 25,000 sea turtles are trapped in illegal fishing nets each year, to such an extent that all kinds of sea turtles are now considered to be in danger of extinction. And there are less and less around to challenge the thriving community of Mediterranean jellyfish.

Ecologists claim that over the past 5-10 years there has been a clear drop in the number and variety of fish swimming in the Mediterranean because of overfishing and illegal fishing practices. And that unless measures are taken to readdress the current situation, massive invasions of jellyfish along the Spanish costas will become more and more common in the future.

Hello. The jellyfish arrived at San Juan beach today Chris. We saw two women and one young boy who had been stung by some jellyfish. So they have arrived, at least in our part of Alicante.

There were jellyfish - pelagia noctiluca, I think - off Fermentera beaches. I got stung - like the burn from the touch of an iron - not as bad as a wasp sting. The pain was gone by the next day. I still have the welt. It didn't put us off swimming but it was useful to have a mask and snorkel.

Hello. We have a holiday home just south of Torrevieja and we saw some jellyfish here last week and today. Interesting to read Anthony's comment about being stung - sounds like you were lucky. Must have been a small one! What are you supposed to do to relieve the pain if you are stung badly? I've heard that jellyfish stings are terribly painful. Anyone know what soothes them?

My daughter was stung by jellyfish every day that she went into the sea at Benalmadena during our stay of 2 weeks in August. Malt vinegar works wonders which was the advice given to us by the Red Cross.

i am 17 years old and i was on holiday in ibiza in late july. i was stung on my back twice and on my hand by a jellyfish. it was unbelievebly painful. my was very large across my back and different to what was mentioned earlier on by some one, mine did not feel like a iron burn and less painful than a wasp sting. mine felt like my back was on fire, abit like a nettle sting but 100 times worse. im not exagerating. the pain did eventually ease off several days later. i was told vinegar would releave the pain so i tryed that and it did work a bit.

My daughter was stung on 2 occasions at Benalmádena in August, though the other 4 of us managed to avoid them.

We read an article in the local free (english) newspaper that said over 4 tons of jellyfish had been removed from the costa del sol this summer, apparently there is an epidemic this year.

We stayed in San Pedro just south of Torrevieja and had to avoid the sea because of the jellyfish last week. Some friends next to our apartment had been stung badly the previous week. So you'll just have to ask when you get there to see what the situation is like.

hi I came back from Menorca the other day after being there with my family for 3 weeks. When we met with some friends in cala en Blanes ont the West side, he showed us a huge scar when stung by one of the many jelly fish which had come into the small bay. It was one of the small purple ones recognised to be the more dangerous. The scar was really bad and even though it was 10 days old was very prominent with a deep line travelling round his arm next to the scar where the tentacle had touched him. Does anyone no what this type are called-the largest are no more than 6 inches in diameter on the top and have 3 or 4 tentacles.

Everyone should wear diving masks and snorkels..they are not expensive, and one can see the jellyfish before they see you...a great way to make new friends is to warn swimmers when the jellyfish are getting close...Hasta!!

We just returned from a week in Ibiza (Santa Eulalia). My 4yr old daughter was stung on our first paddle in the sea, she was in agony. Red Cross put vinegar on it which seemed to ease it slightly then a nice lady put some sting cream on - it had happened to her daughter last year. Cleared up within a few days but has now re-appeared. Hospital have given Piriton and advised to try vinegar again. Does anyone know why they come back up again ??

Me and my girlfriend stayed in Cala D'Or in Majorca a month ago and I was stung in the sea by a dark blackish looking jellyfish on my arm. Was very painful and the scar is still here now.
After I got stung over a dozen people came out of the sea with stings.
Put me off going into the sea after that.

I was stung by a jelly fish last week while swimming in Port de Soller, was very very painful. Used an after bite lotion containing amonia and the swelling went down, however has become raised again today and is once again very painful! Think I may take a trip to the doctor tomorrow to see if I need antibiotics to rid of the inflamation?

Please be aware that jellyfish stings are not the most pleasant things to have. They often scar and cover quite a large area in comparison to a wasp/bee sting. If you have seen any jellyfish in shallower waters-DO NOT GO IN.Especially children who could have a very tearful introduction to the sea-and if stung would probably want to avoid the beach/sea altogether.
